Instead USD/INR has held below ₹95. The explanation is not a fundamental improvement in India’s position — it is an extraordinary, and temporary, combination of dollar inflows and central-bank intervention.

The recent strength of the Indian rupee is unusual because the normal relationship between crude oil and USD/INR is currently being challenged. Brent is around $95–96 a barrel, a level that ordinarily creates pressure on the rupee. Yet USD/INR has remained below ₹95, and the rupee has strengthened further to around ₹94.45.

Understanding why matters more than the level itself, because the forces holding the rupee up are measurable, identifiable, and time-limited.

1The biggest factor: exceptional dollar inflows

The most important explanation is the RBI’s special USD/INR swap facility. By 31 August, banks had mobilised an extraordinary $127.2 billion through FCNR(B) deposits, while total foreign-currency mobilisation through the special facilities reached about $136.4 billion. This is far above what the market originally expected.

The FCNR(B) window is now closed to fresh mobilisation, but swaps against already-contracted deposits can continue until 11 September.

The significance is not simply that $127 billion is being sold in the spot market. Rather, the RBI has acquired substantial foreign-currency resources through the swap mechanism while banks receive rupee liquidity in exchange. This has dramatically strengthened the central bank’s ability to manage the FX market.

By 31 August

$127.2 bn mobilised through FCNR(B) deposits; $136.4 bn total across the special facilities.

Now

The FCNR(B) window is closed to fresh mobilisation.
